It turns out that when you’re unable to leave your house unassisted for nearly two weeks straight, your ability to come up with and write interesting stuff suffers. I know, surprising right?

Let’s see, I could blog about how Doc only snores when he’s in his crate, which is confusing to me because I can’t figure out why that should be. I could also write about how my snowman now looks all mutilated and distorted because of all the fresh snow that’s fallen since Sunday. Maybe I could muse about how my slippers are amazing because they continue to stay on my feet despite having only tiny little strips of fabric left on the bottom.

It’s a good thing I’m not going to write about all that drivel because oh my gosh how boring.

Instead, perhaps I’ll just share a bit about how Wes and I spent our Christmas. I know, it pales in comparison to how interesting my slippers are but y’all are just going to have to deal with it, m’kay?

We spent a lovely Christmas day with Wes’ family (my family was unavailable for wassailing due to snow/prohibitive plane ticket prices). Wes’ amazing pie-ingenue mother showed me how to make a proper pie and I took many mental notes that will hopefully avail me in the future. There was good food, fun people, and my two adorable nieces who light up every room they walk into.

At the ages of six and four, they’re both fully capable of real grown-up stuff. My oldest niece was happy to show me how well she writes and spells words (really hard words, like “bright” and “chair”. They’re not hard words to an adult, but for a first grader???) and my youngest niece was proudly writing out words and letters with the greatest of ease.

I guess I’m just in shock because of how quickly they’ve grown up. Before I know it, they’ll be driving and going to college and I’ll still be wondering if they’ll play dress-up with me. I have the feeling this bodes well for future bouts of crying during my kids’ birthdays.

In a nutshell, that was Christmas. A lot of happy people, a couple not-so-little-anymore people, some amazing presents, and a lot of really excellent food. What more could you ask for in a holiday?

-Perception, Ha! Vegas, huh? I can’t imagine you hitting the craps table or spending some quality time with a slot machine, but I bet you’re very lucky!!
